Traffic Case Records in Lewis County
Traffic and non-traffic infractions in unincorporated Lewis County land in District Court. City matters, though, may belong to Centralia, Chehalis, Napavine, or Winlock Municipal Court. Under the 2026 interlocal change, Morton services route to Napavine. Toledo falls within Winlock's coverage. Check the state court directory. Look for anything labeled as a violations bureau or otherwise assigned. The clerk where the case sits keeps the case record, docket events, hearing entries, disposition, and payment status. A city court keeps its own municipal file. The police agency that wrote the ticket does not pick the portal. The court name printed on the citation does.
Lewis County Defendant Access
District Court runs an online Defendant Access service. It handles citation lookup and payment. You can search with a citation number plus date of birth. A driver-license number works as the alternate path. Enter only the fields the portal asks for. Save the receipt when a deadline is near. The official Lewis County Defendant Access interface shows the search and payment route.

A city citation may go through a different vendor or counter. If the court name on a payment screen looks wrong, stop. Contact the issuing court before sending any money to Lewis District on a guess.
| Portal field | Type | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Citation Number | Text | Exact ticket identifier, paired with birth date |
| Date of Birth | Date/text | Verification field; do not publish it |
| Driver License Number | Text | Alternate lookup path when offered |
| Court | Venue | Lewis District or the issuing municipal court |
| Case or cause number | Text | Court identifier that may differ from the citation |

Lewis County Thirty-Day Response Rule
The District Court infractions page gives you 30 days from the issue date to respond. Your choices: pay, mitigate, or contest at a hearing. You can also respond in writing. Seek a deferral if you qualify. Pick the procedure from the current court form. An online payment screen is not the only response route. The official Lewis County infraction instructions show the deadline and hearing choices.

Video appearances are unavailable effective February 1, 2024, per District Court. Physical evidence on a thumb drive or CD stays with the court, so bring whatever equipment you need to present it.

Lewis County Traffic Response Choices
Each response asks the Lewis County court for a different result. Mitigation admits the infraction but explains the circumstances. A contest makes the state prove it by a preponderance. Written-hearing forms let an eligible case proceed on the submitted record. Deferral is discretionary and comes with local conditions.
| Choice | What it does | Route |
|---|---|---|
| Pay | Satisfies the payment route; retain proof of posting | Approved online service, mail, or counter |
| Mitigate | Admits the infraction and asks the court to consider the facts | Mitigation request or hearing |
| Contest | Requires proof and can lead to committed or not-committed result | Contested-hearing request |
| Written hearing | Uses the court's written mitigation or contest form | Exact form and deadline |
| Deferral | Postpones a finding under discretionary terms | Eligibility review and court order |
Failure to respond or appear: The Lewis County court may enter judgment, add fees, notify DOL, or issue a warrant depending on the matter. Resolve the case with the court that holds it.
Lewis County Traffic Deferrals
Lewis District allows one moving and one nonmoving deferral within seven years. All of it is subject to judicial discretion. You need a valid license and the court's required coverage. CDL holders and commercial-vehicle citations are not eligible under the published terms. The deferral period runs six to twelve months. The administrative fee is $175, and a $10 time-payment fee may apply. Finish successfully and the infraction is dismissed. Fail, and the original penalty can return with a $52 addition and other consequences. Pending charges toll the term. These are District Court terms. A municipal court's process must be read from that court's current instructions.
Two Records: Court File and Driver File
Lewis County traffic court keeps one file. Washington Department of Licensing keeps another. The court docket shows what happened in the citation case. DOL keeps its own licensing record and gets reports from the courts. Neither office can hand you the other's certified document.
| Point | Court file | DOL file |
|---|---|---|
| Custodian | Lewis District or issuing municipal clerk | Washington Department of Licensing |
| Shows | Citation, docket events, plea or response, hearings, judgment, disposition, payment status | Licensing actions and court-reported driving events kept by DOL |
| Official copy | Court lookup or clerk request | DOL's own record process |
| Cannot supply | DOL's complete licensing file | The court's certified judgment or full citation case |
For an unresolved citation, DOL says the court must send the update once you resolve the issue with that court. Any DOL review or reissue charge is separate from court copy charges.
Lewis County Unresolved Citation Route
A failure to pay or respond can move past the open court docket. Winlock, for one, states a $52 failure-to-pay penalty plus possible DOL suspension or collections. The exact consequence turns on the venue and the proceeding. Start with the court file itself. Ask what judgment, payment, or compliance step remains. Get proof once it is done. The court then reports the update to DOL when required. Do not send a court payment to DOL. Never assume a licensing transaction changes the Lewis County judgment.
Traffic Record Copy Fees
The court that keeps the file is where you order a Lewis County traffic case copy. District Court posts its charges. City clerks set their own Municipal fees, so confirm the cost with that office first.
| District Court item | Fee | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Plain copy | $0.25 per page | Request through District Court |
| Certified document | $5 | Certification is supplied by the court |
| Hearing recording on USB | $20 | District audio route; For The Record is also linked |
The District Court records page states the access and fee options.

Mail works, or fax the request to 360-740-2779, or stop at the District counter in person. Note that GR 31.1 governs administrative judicial records, which sit apart from traffic case files.
Lewis County Traffic Status Terms
Short codes only hint at what happened. To read one right, pull the underlying court event; a hearing label by itself never settles the final result.
- Committed
- Washington CLJ code C records a committed infraction.
- Deferred finding
- A finding held under court terms; it differs from deferred prosecution.
- Dismissed
- Codes can distinguish dismissal with or without prejudice; read the order.
- FTA or FTR
- Failure to appear or respond, which can trigger a judgment, fee, DOL notice, or warrant.
When you need the exact Lewis County outcome, rely on the signed judgment or a court-confirmed docket. A payment receipt shows a transaction. It does not prove the case posted or closed. After a deadline-sensitive payment, check the Lewis County court file. Still open? Hand the clerk your confirmation number. For a written hearing, keep the filed form and your proof that the correct court received it. Those records let the clerk trace a mismatch without mixing up the citation identifier, the court cause number, and the payment reference.
